It was dark when Caroline woke. Hugh was still holding on tightly to her, even in his sleep, and the warmth from his naked body was enveloping her. His warmth and nearness made the tingling sensation between her legs start again and Caroline was certain that she was completely wanton. She needed to leave this bed before she woke him up and asked him to start all over again.
She gently lifted the arm that was resting on her midriff and moved out from under it, lowering it slowly to the bed again. She stood naked, trying to have a last look at him, but it was impossible in the darkness. A maid had been by a couple of days ago with her clothes and Caroline slowly moved across the room and, as soundlessly as possible, put them on. The maid had done a good job of it and Caroline enjoyed putting on the clothes that felt fresher than they had in a long time.
When she stood fully dressed, she looked at the bed again. There was no reason to wait, no reason to hesitate. And still, she could not take her eyes off Hughâs dark figure, the only thing she could make out of him in the bed.
If she woke him up, would he then ask her to be his mistress? He would probably have figured it all out by now. Where she could live close to his estate, perhaps he already owned a small house close by where she could live with a couple of servants. She would have a place to call home for the first time in two years.
And she would not even have to give him something that she did not want to give. She wanted to sleep with him. She wanted to encourage him and have fun. Even though they had not known each other a fortnight, she would not mind bearing his children. But they would be illegitimate children, and she would be a fallen woman. However much she would enjoy Hughâs visits, at some point he would marry a respectable woman and have legitimate children by her.
Perhaps he would stop visiting Caroline and break her heart. Perhaps he would keep visiting her and break her heart anyway, because he was going home to his wife each time heâd been to see her. And as his mistress, she would never be allowed to express her dissatisfaction with the arrangement. Her job would be to make him happy and content. Her job, yes. Being a mistress would be yet another job she took for money where she had to please someone else. Only this job seemed to also include heartbreak.
No, it was not an option. It was better that she left. Hopefully, she could stay with her aunt. If not, she would have to find another type of employment fast.
Caroline picked up her cloak and bonnet, put both on as silently as possible and left the room. She had expected it to be the middle of the night, but as she entered the hallway, she realized that it had to be early morning.
